About this quitline

Spain does not have a single nationwide quitline like the United States, but free and confidential help is available. The Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC) operates 900 100 036, a toll-free line open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, that provides information and support including for people trying to quit smoking. In Catalonia, the Generalitat's Línia Verda offers the same kind of help at 900 900 540, also 24/7, with chat and video-call options. Primary-care doctors in the public Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS) provide cessation support, and since 1 January 2020 the SNS finances the medications bupropion and varenicline for eligible patients enrolled in a quit-smoking programme.

Spain does not have a single federal quitline. The closest equivalents are two toll-free helplines: 900 100 036, run by the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC), and 900 900 540, the Generalitat de Catalunya's Línia Verda for drug-dependency advice (which includes tobacco). Both are free and operate around the clock. People in any region can also ask their primary-care doctor for cessation support through the public health system.

Is help to quit smoking free in Spain?
Yes. Calls to 900 100 036 (AECC) and 900 900 540 (Línia Verda) are free and confidential. Smoking-cessation consultations with a primary-care doctor in the Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS) are also free for residents. Since 1 January 2020 the SNS additionally finances bupropion and varenicline for one quit attempt per year for patients who meet the eligibility criteria.

What languages are supported?
AECC primarily serves callers in Spanish. Línia Verda answers in Catalan and Spanish. Primary-care services within the public health system are typically available in the official languages of each autonomous community (Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician, Valencian). The Ministerio de Sanidad also publishes online quit-smoking material in English and French.

Does the Spanish health system fund medications to stop smoking?
Yes. Since 1 January 2020, Spain's Sistema Nacional de Salud finances bupropion and varenicline through electronic prescription. Patients must be enrolled in an individual or group support programme, smoke at least 10 cigarettes a day, score 7 or higher on the Fagerström test, and have made at least one quit attempt in the past year. The SNS funds one quit attempt per patient per year.
